Vice President, Information Technology (hybrid)


As the VP of Information Technology at the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), you will lead our technology systems and strategy, creating a roadmap to integrate our technologies, focusing on understanding internal business intelligence needs, and enhancing our member experience. AIAA is the world’s largest technical society dedicated to the global aerospace profession. Our nearly 30,000 individual members from 91 countries and 95 corporate members are scientists, engineers, students, educators, and professionals in the aerospace field. Since 1963, they have achieved virtually every milestone in modern American flight. Our board is eager to see progress on our digital transformation journey and they are open to supporting new projects. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer and supported by a team of 2 and vendors, you will strategize and implement technology solutions (e.g., the architecture of a data lake) that will allow us to leverage predictive analytics to meet business needs and make data-informed decisions about budgets, marketing, products, and services. To do this, we recognize the need to enhance and integrate our current technologies (association management system, content management system, online community, abstract and manuscript submission platform, electronic library, video content library, learning management system, event registration, scholarship and awards management), improve marketing automation, create business intelligence dashboards, and evaluate our current organization structure. Currently, our technology resources are dispersed with product owners. We will be looking to move to a more integrated IT strategy to support an agile culture.


In support of your work, we have initiated a technology assessment to document customer and engagement data flows and identify opportunities and means to improve data flow integrations. Using this as a base and working with leadership and product owners, you will identify, define, and prioritize their needs then find technology solutions that meet them. This position is ideal for a business-minded IT professional who knows technology, has demonstrated IT strategic planning, can manage multiple vendors, and has led software development and data integration projects.

Responsibilities/Duties

  • Provide technical expertise and project management across the Institute to support enterprise applications and integrations as needed.
  • Establish and maintain interoperability among AIAA enterprise applications to ensure continuity of financial, customer/member demographic, and behavioral data across the Institute.
  • Develop and manage the architecture of a data lake that will allow the Institute to leverage predictive analytics.
  • Support a strong customer service-oriented culture supporting AIAA staff in daily business operations. Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively.
  • Maintain an enterprise-wide IT security program to ensure all IT assets are protected and staff are educated in cybersecurity awareness. Create, maintain, and regularly exercise an IT business continuity and disaster recovery plan.
  • Maintain and secure infrastructure and network systems to support the Institute’s internal operations.
  • Establish governance rules to guide system and application acquisition throughout the Institute to ensure interoperability among enterprise systems and allow continuity of data.
  • Develop and maintain an IT project portfolio that reflects the strategic and business priorities of the Institute, including staff/vendor resources and costs. Schedule estimates required to implement requested capabilities.
  • Lead IT budget development and resource management to include multi-year budgeting and expense projections, software license and equipment contracts, and vendor/external resource costs.
  • Develop strategies for hiring and developing in-house staff and manage more than 20 outsourced contracts/consultants to achieve AIAA IT and strategic objectives.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, sciences, or technology or a combination of education and experience which demonstrates the necessary skills and abilities required for the position.
  • Ten or more years of managerial experience including developing and implementing organization-wide IT strategies aligned with an organization's mission and focused on user experience.
  • Familiar with oversight of IT budgets and outsourced vendors.
  • Knowledge and understanding of industry trends, current practices, new developments, and applicable technologies regarding the use of technology, preferably in a not-for-profit environment.
  • Experience with integrating platforms and services.
  • Ability to travel domestically, approximately 4 times per year.
