Description/Job Summary

The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics is seeking a dynamic, experienced Membership Director who will be responsible for:

  • Developing and implementing a modern and forward-looking comprehensive membership strategy that will lead to growth for both student and professional membership.
  • Overseeing development, planning, and management of membership initiatives, including membership process and member retention and recruitment efforts.
  • Developing regular reports on membership metrics and recommending/developing new member programs and services.
  • Developing and maintaining clear value proposition for membership internally and externally.
  • Ensuring high quality service and support is provided to all members and customers.


  • Responsible for overall strategy, evolution, and growth of student and professional membership.
    • Develop, present, and manage implementation of approved proposals to update and modernize membership and membership packages.
    • Forecast membership growth potential and create strategies to target specific segments (young professionals, underrepresented minorities, international, early career, adjacent technical constituents, etc.)
    • Collaborate with Marketing to develop and execute compelling campaigns for member recruitment and retention, based upon the growth strategy.
    • Collaborate with Marketing to clearly convey the value and relevance of AIAA membership in all print and digital media.
    • Collaborate with Marketing to monitor and analyze recruitment incentives, bundles, and promotions to meet member acquisition targets.
    • Oversee the monthly membership renewal process for all categories of membership.
    • Conduct regular assessments of member benefits to determine and refine the membership value proposition. 
    • Recommend and/or develop, based on customer research and analysis, new initiatives that will add member value.
    • Track, analyze and report on membership metrics, trends, and campaign effectiveness.
  • Review membership administration processes and procedures and make recommendations for improvements. 
  • Provide guidance and insight across AIAA (including our volunteer leaders of committees and communities) as to effective ways to articulate and deliver on our value proposition.
  • Identify, research, and execute membership partnership agreements with organizations that will add value and contribute to our growth and diversity goals.
  • Maintain awareness of other professional and trade associations’ membership offerings and benchmark AIAA against those organizations.
  • Provide leadership, guidance, and direction to the Membership Coordinator.

Position Dimensions:

  • Ensure campaigns achieve the desired results and are completed in a timely manner and within budget.  
  • Collaborate with staff and segments of the volunteer leadership, as appropriate, to accomplish goals/objectives. 
  • Occasional travel.

  • Proven ability to work in a team environment and produce results in conjunction with fellow team members.
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills including the ability to use member research, hard data, and metrics to assess marketing programs  
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail  
  • Proven ability to supervise and motivate staff 
  • Excellent command of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint)

Required Experience

  • At least 8-10 years of relevant professional experience with evidence of increasing responsibility.
  • Association or non-for-profit experience is a plus

Required Education

Bachelor’s Degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
